With the stellar starting five the Jays had put together over the off-season, any thoughts of him joining the rotation were fanciful at best. Colorado traded him to Cleveland for cash considerations before the Jays picked him up from the Indians, seemingly as a depth arm, in exchange for Mike Aviles and Yan Gomes last November. Flash forward to Thursday, and Rogers is suddenly a welcome surprise for the Jays and their troubled rotation.
With Morrow down in Florida, rehabbing a forearm strain, Toronto management went down a path it did not think it would have to take back in spring training. After restocking the rotation so that it boasted five all-star-calibre starters, GM Alex Anthopoulos was forced this week to acquire Chien-Ming Wang to shore up the injury-plagued rotation, which essentially has had holes in the fourth and fifth slots for most of the season.
After three starts, he just keeps getting better. Morrow is due to throw a bullpen this week, then make a pair of rehab starts in the minor leagues. That process should take two to three weeks. Ultimately, it appears that Rogers and Wang will battle it out for the fifth and final spot in the rotation. Copyright owned or licensed by Toronto Star Newspapers Limited.

Carlos Beltran, no longer a slugger diminished by injury, was a five-RBI powerhouse who continues to drive the offense. The starting rotation isn’t a tragedy of injuries, but a series of success stories like the strong spot start by Esmil Rogers and the impending return of Michael Pineda. Derek Jeter singled in a five-run first for his 3,th career hit to tie Honus Wagner for sixth place on the baseball’s all-time list.
All good stuff and yet all dampened a bit by a single piece of bad news. Brian McCann was forced from the game with what the Yankees’ termed “a mild concussion” and it’s unclear how long the Bombers’ starting catcher might be out. McCann took a foul tip squarely on the front of his mask during a third-inning strikeout of Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis.
He remained in the game after a visit from trainer Steve Donohue. But in the sixth inning, with the Bombers up after Beltran took Tribe reliever John Axford over the right field fence for a grand slam, McCann came out of the game.
