The dating and phasing of the timber circle complex at Ballynahatty, Co. Sarah Gormley. School of Natural and Built Environment. Abstract This thesis sets out to present and analyse the remains excavated from the timber circle complex at Ballynahatty, and to define and clarify the phases uncovered. The site forms part of the henge tradition, an assemblage of sites and artefacts well defined in Britain and yet so poorly understood in Ireland.

It was only with the recent discovery of the timber circles at Knowth, Co. Meath and Ballynahatty, Co. Down, that the presence of a timber circle and Grooved Ware tradition on this island has been fully recognised. Ballynahatty is an integral part of the meagre corpus of excavated sites representing, not only this tradition, but also the end of the Neolithic in Ireland as a whole, and so it is vital that the results and interpretation be presented in order to elucidate this period.

By providing an in depth analysis of this particular site, it is hoped to pave the way toward a greater understanding of this impressive ceremonial monument, and the implications for the study of the Late Neolithic in Ireland. The townland of Ballynahatty is situated in the north-east of Ireland, within the lowland area of the Lagan Valley Fig. The soil covering is glacially derived sand and gravel, typically laid down by melt water close to, or beneath, an ice sheet.

The townland of Ballynahatty itself extends ha in area and lies on carboniferous rock of basal permian sandstone and brockram.

You think you’re in a relationship for life. Then it all goes wrong. Two years ago, Lisa O’Hara was living in London as a fully paid-up member of what Bridget Jones dubbed the smug married fraternity. Highly paid job? Successful husband? Mortgages on two homes? Check and check. Married for five years and in a relationship with her husband since she was 21, her single days were well and truly behind her. Or so the year-old thought.

When her husband confessed he had been seeing someone else, the marriage fell apart and she went from smug married to sad singleton. It is home to a group of megalithic tombs dating back to the 4th millennium BC , which sit on top of a range of hills. It is deemed one of the four main passage tomb sites in Ireland and is a protected National Monument. The area is also home to the Loughcrew Estate, from which it is named. Legend has it that the monuments were created when a giant hag, striding across the land, dropped her cargo of large stones from her apron. No comprehensive dating programme has been conducted there, but the monuments are estimated to date from about BC.

The sites consist of cruciform chambers covered in most instances by a mound. A unique style of megalithic petroglyphs are seen there, including lozenge shapes, leaf shapes, as well as circles, some surrounded by radiating lines. This also makes them vulnerable to vandalism. Irish folklore holds that it is bad luck to damage or disrespect such tombs and that doing so could bring a curse.

In Irish-American researcher Martin Brennan discovered that Cairn T in Carnbane East is directed to receive the beams of the rising sun on the spring and autumnal equinox – the light shining down the passage and illuminating the art on the backstone. There are about twenty-three tombs in the Loughcrew complex in addition to Cairn L and Cairn T, along with additional archeological sites.

In more recent centuries Loughcrew became the seat of a branch of the Norman-Irish Plunkett family, whose most famous member became the martyred St Oliver Plunkett. The family church stands in the grounds of Loughcrew Gardens.
